Visit The World’s Longest Bamboo Bridge
The Kampong Cham Bamboo Bridge, known as the world’s longest of its kind, connects Kampong Cham to Koh Paen Island. Located just south of Kampong Cham city, Koh Paen sits in the middle of the Mekong River and is famous for this impressive 1km long bamboo bridge, which is rebuilt each year by the local community. This seasonal structure is constructed from December to June, when the river’s water levels drop too low for the ferry to operate. Stretching some 90m across the Mekong, this unique bridge is both an engineering marvel and a popular attraction for visitors to the area.
For daily traffic, the Bamboo Bridge was replaced by a modern bridge, while ferries continue to service the island, primarily from the eastern side, connecting to Kaoh Sotin District on the opposite bank of the Mekong. However, tourists can still walk across the bamboo bridge for a small fee of around $1 per person, making it a popular route to reach Koh Paen’s beach, which is a favorite among locals. Once on the island, visitors can explore small vendors and local restaurants offering traditional Khmer food and drinks, providing a glimpse into local life and culture.
