Looking back on the construction of the bamboo Lotus Shala

Looking back on the early days of Hanchey Bamboo Resort, the creation of our Bamboo Lotus Shala marked a defining moment in our commitment to sustainability and community development. Constructed as a haven for meditation and yoga, the Lotus Shala was not only our first dedicated wellness space in Kampong Cham but also a bold statement on eco-friendly architecture.

A Pioneer in Sustainable Design

Our Lotus Shala is a true embodiment of sustainable design. By using locally sourced bamboo—a rapidly renewable material that reaches full maturity in just 3–5 years—our project minimized environmental impact compared to traditional hardwoods that require decades to grow. This fast regeneration cycle not only keeps the carbon footprint low but also helps preserve local forests and prevent soil erosion through bamboo’s extensive rhizome system.

Throughout the construction, we worked closely with the Mekong Bamboo company—recognized as one of the first bamboo construction teams in Cambodia—to employ local craftsmen. Supported by BSDA, this collaboration not only provided on-the-job training and boosted the local economy but also ensured that every beam and panel was crafted using local techniques. Our construction photos capture the meticulous craftsmanship and eco-friendly methods used on site.

Sustainable Bamboo Engineering

Advanced engineering research highlights that bamboo’s structural properties—its high tensile strength, flexibility, and durability—are comparable to those of more energy-intensive materials like steel and concrete, yet bamboo requires only a fraction of their embodied energy. Our design further embraces sustainable principles by incorporating natural ventilation and passive cooling. The open, airy spaces of the Lotus Hall create a seamless connection between the covered areas and the surrounding lotus ponds, reducing the need for mechanical air-conditioning and enhancing energy efficiency. Something that guests have always appreciated during our sunrise and sunset yoga classes.

The First Oasis for Yoga in Kampong Cham

While Hanchey Bamboo Resort was always about offering our guests a unique experience, the construction of the Lotus Shala marked a major moment in the region’s wellness landscape. It became the very first venue in Kampong Cham dedicated to yoga and meditation—a tranquil haven designed to nurture both body and soul. The hall’s design, inspired by the delicate lotus flower, symbolizes purity and rebirth, resonating deeply with the philosophies of mindfulness and inner peace.

The Lotus Shala has since evolved into a multi-functional space. Not only does it host regular yoga classes guests and the local community, but it also serves as the setting for immersive yoga retreats and workshops. Offering an outdoor, nature-infused space where movement, meditation, and fresh air come together.

Moreover, the hall has proven versatile for corporate meetings, staff trainings and even our staff retreats. Its open design fosters a collaborative environment that contrasts sharply with conventional office spaces, making it an inspiring venue for team-building activities and strategic workshops. Additionally, the space supports BSDA training sessions, empowering local communities through skill development and social enterprise initiatives. For occasions that call for a more traditional setup, we now also offer a conventional indoor meeting hall. This diverse usage underscores how the Lotus Shala offers a refreshing, multi-dimensional experience that extends well beyond traditional wellness or corporate settings.

Merging Tradition with Modernity

The vision behind the Bamboo Lotus Hall was brought to life in close collaboration with the talented Atelier Cole team and Elettra Melani, working closely with local craftsmen and women. The design gracefully marries traditional Cambodian aesthetics with contemporary eco-conscious construction techniques, ensuring that the space is not only visually stunning but also aligned with modern sustainability standards.

A Commitment to Community and the Environment

More than just a structure for meditation and yoga, the Lotus Hall embodies our dedication to social enterprise. Every step of its construction was a conscious decision to invest in the local community. The training programs initiated during the building process equipped local artisans with valuable skills, ensuring that sustainable practices continue to flourish long after the hall’s opening.

This blend of eco-sustainability and social empowerment set a benchmark in Kampong Cham, paving the way for a new era in eco-tourism and community development. It’s a legacy that continues to inspire—reminding us that true luxury lies in harmony with nature and in the upliftment of local communities.

Temporary Closure for Songkran: 31st April - 1st May 2025

Hanchey Bamboo Resort will be temporarily closed on March 31 and April 1, 2025. During this time, our team will join the BSDA Alumni and Songkran Event at Smile School to celebrate the Khmer New Year alongside our partners at BSDA (Buddhism for Social Development Action).

While we are not hosting events at the resort during this period, we are excited to take part in traditional celebrations that honor Cambodia’s rich heritage.

Looking Back at Songkran 2024

Last year, we celebrated Songkran with a vibrant community gathering, bringing together guests, staff, and BSDA’s talented performers. The event featured traditional Khmer blessings, Apsara dance performances, and cultural activities. Guests joined in classic ew Year games, enjoyed festive meals, and participated in the water blessing ceremony, a symbolic ritual for renewal and good fortune.

How we’ll be celebrating Songkran in 2025

This year’s event at Smile School will once again highlight Cambodia’s New Year traditions through games, ceremonies, and meaningful cultural rituals. The celebration is an opportunity to connect with local communities and experience the joy of Khmer New Year.

Traditional Khmer Games

Games are a key part of Khmer New Year, encouraging community spirit, teamwork, and laughter. Many of these games have been passed down for generations, reflecting the joy and playfulness of Khmer culture.

  • Chol Chhoung (ចោលឈូង) – A fast-paced throwing game played between two teams. A small wrapped object, usually a krama (traditional Cambodian scarf), is tossed between players. If the object hits someone, they must sing or dance before rejoining the game. It’s one of the most lively and entertaining Songkran activities.

  • Leak Kanseng (លាក់កន្សែង) – A game of stealth and speed. Players sit in a circle while one person secretly places a krama behind someone’s back. If the chosen person notices, they must grab the krama and chase the placer before they can return to the empty seat.

  • Bos Angkunh (បោះអង្គុញ) – A game of skill and precision. Large, nut-shaped wooden discs called angkunh are thrown to hit an opponent’s pieces. Traditionally, the losing team may be playfully "punished" by having their knees gently knocked with the winning team's angkunh.

  • Bay Khon (បាយខុន) – A blindfolded game where players use a stick to hit a clay pot suspended in the air. Friends guide them by shouting directions to help them break the pot, which is often filled with small prizes. This game tests coordination and trust.

  • Pong Krobei (បោងក្របី) – A humorous game where participants, with their hands tied behind their backs, try to grab and bite a hanging piece of fruit or cake. It’s always a favorite among children and adds a fun challenge to the festivities.

New Year Rituals

Khmer New Year is not just about celebration—it’s also a time for spiritual renewal, gratitude, and seeking blessings for the year ahead.

  • Pagoda Visits – Many people visit temples such as Wat Hanchey to make offerings of food, incense, and flowers, seeking blessings for health and happiness. Monks chant prayers and sprinkle holy water over visitors, symbolizing protection and prosperity.

If you're interested in experiencing these traditions, our reception team can assist in arranging a visit to Wat Hanchey after we reopen.

  • Water Blessing Ceremony – A key ritual where water is poured over Buddha statues, elders, and loved ones. This act represents washing away past misfortunes and welcoming new beginnings. It’s a beautiful and symbolic moment of respect and renewal.

Resort Bookings and Availability

Although we will be closed on March 31 and April 1 2025, Hanchey Bamboo Resort remains open for bookings before and after these dates. Whether you are planning a relaxing retreat or looking to experience Cambodia’s cultural traditions, we invite you to visit us.

While we endeavour to provide year-round access to our resort, it is an important part of our work as a social enterprise to come together with our staff for cultural events, as well as for continued professional development such as out Staff Retreat in June, earlier this year.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you soon.

Community Yoga Classes in Kampong Cham

We’re excited to offer community yoga classes led by Gisèle Lupi, an experienced yoga teacher originally from New Zealand. Gisèle has previously visited the resort, offering retreats and sharing her expertise in yoga and wellness. She has taught in various settings around the world and brings a unique perspective to every session. Classes take place every Saturday and Sunday from 2–3 pm in our serene Lotus Shala, with no yoga mat needed—just come as you are.

What is yoga, and what are the benefits?

Yoga, which means union, is a practice that connects the body, mind, and spirit through gentle movements and mindful breathing. It is known to reduce stress, improve flexibility, and enhance overall well-being. More importantly, it provides an opportunity to bring people together, fostering connections and community. Whether you are new to yoga or looking to explore something different, these sessions are a great way to feel more balanced and relaxed.

At Hanchey Bamboo Resort, we’ve noticed that we are the only ones offering yoga in Kampong Cham. We believe yoga should be more accessible to everyone, not just our guests, and this inspired us to create classes that the local community can enjoy. Our Lotus Shala, surrounded by tranquil lotus ponds, provides the perfect space to unwind. After class, there’s plenty more to enjoy at the resort, from a refreshing dip in the pool to savoring fresh, local meals with stunning views of the Mekong River. You can also explore ideas for day visits to make the most of your time here.

Why we’re offering these classes

As part of our commitment to making a positive impact, we aim to support the local community while fostering meaningful cultural exchanges. These classes are an opportunity to introduce yoga and wellness practices to those who may not have experienced them before. We are also always interested in supporting local businesses and people, reflecting our mission to create a stronger, connected region.

We also offer them to our own staff to help support their mental and physical wellbeing, developing skills alongside those they learn working with us and with BSDA.

Celebrating Songkran 2024 in Kampong Cham

សួស្តីឆ្នាំថ្មី - Sousdey Chhnam Thmey!

Happy Khmer New Year!

Over the past few days (April 13-15, 2024) the team here at Hanchey Bamboo Resort have been celebrating Songkran in spirited fashion alongside our community in Kampong Cham.

Morning Rituals and Traditional Performances

The celebrations began with reflective blessings from a local monk, inviting tranquility and goodwill. Shortly after, the air filled with the rhythm and grace of the BSDA’s Apsara Dance students. This performance by young Khmer artists is part of BSDAcommitment to preserving Cambodian culture. By training in these ancient dances, students keep their heritage alive, engaging in activities that enrich their identities. The Apsara dance, known for its storytelling, was a highlight, enchanting all who attended.

Community Games and Activities

The afternoon was a showcase of camaraderie and traditional fun. Games like 'hit the pot' and 'tug of war' were met with laughter and competitive spirits. These activities, typical of Khmer New Year celebrations, are a fantastic way for both young and old to connect through shared heritage.

Adding to the communal atmosphere, BSDA's foreign volunteers participated enthusiastically, helping bridge cultures and create a global family right here in Kampong Cham. The event was also a culinary delight, with attendees sharing traditional Khmer food, symbolizing unity and community spirit.

The importance of sharing our traditional culture

The Apsara dancers from BSDA, who often perform at the resort for various retreats and events, are a testament to our dedication to cultural exchange and community involvement. Events like these allow us to showcase the rich tapestry of Cambodian traditions and offer guests and locals alike a meaningful, immersive experience.

As we reflect on a successful Songkran, we are excited to invite even more participants for next year's festivities. Join us next year to experience the warmth and vibrancy of Khmer culture as we aim to make Songkran 2025 even more spectacular. Let's celebrate, connect, and create new memories together at Hanchey Bamboo Resort.

Apsara Dance at Hanchey Bamboo Resort: A Cultural and Social Enterprise Triumph in Kampong Cham

Apsara Dance at Hanchey Bamboo Resort: A Cultural and Social Enterprise Triumph in Kampong Cham

The Apsara Dance is far more than a spectacle; it's a narrative experience. The dance often portrays stories from the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana, or tales of celestial nymphs from Cambodian folklore. Each movement, each expression, is a chapter in a story that is deeply rooted in the traditions of Kampong Cham and Cambodia at large.

The Art of Apsara Dance one of Kampong Cham’s Cultural Jewels

Cambodia's Living Heritage: The Apsara Dance

Apsara Dance, or របាំអប្សរា, is a profound expression of Cambodia's cultural mythology, performed to narrate celestial tales, often inscribed on ancient temples. This classical Khmer dance, preserved and celebrated at Hanchey Bamboo Resort and by the Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA), continues to enchant and educate.

Historical Echoes in Kampong Cham

In our home province of Kampong Cham, the echoes of history are visible in the intricate carvings of Apsara dancers at local temples like Nokor Banteay and Wat Nokor depicting this beautiful facet of our shared history. These sites not only celebrate but also serve as custodians of this divine dance tradition. Walking through these historic sites, visitors can feel a direct connection to the past as every sculpture and relief tells a part of the grand story of Cambodian culture. Furthermore, the preservation of these temples allows for a continued appreciation and understanding of the profound spiritual and artistic achievements of the Khmer Empire.

What Makes Apsara Unique?

Apsara dance is characterized by its slow, deliberate movements that tell a story through intricate gestures rather than words. Each performance is a complex narrative expressed through over 1,500 hand movements, each meticulously trained to perfection, and the ornate costumes add to the visual spectacle, reflecting the dance's royal origins. The precision of these movements requires years of dedicated practice, and the dancers' ability to convey deep emotions and tales without speaking is a testament to their skill and training. Moreover, the traditional flowing fabrics and intricate jewelry worn by the performers not only recreate the historical attire but also enhance the ethereal quality of the dance, making each performance a visual feast.

BSDA's Educational Outreach

The BSDA plays a critical role in this cultural ecosystem. At their Apsara schools located at Nokor Bachey Pagoda and along National Road 7A, they use dance as a medium to provide holistic education to disadvantaged youths while also preserving our cultural heritage by sharing it with future generations. Students not only learn dance but are also supported through their general education, funded by the dance performances themselves.

Sustainable Support Through Performance

Performances at BSDA’s schools aren't just recitals; they are a lifeline that funds local educational programs. Proceeds from ticket sales are meticulously allocated towards maintaining essential equipment, supporting educational scholarships, and covering operational costs. This model of sustainability helps foster a generation of dancers who are not only skilled in their art but also academically accomplished. More importantly, this initiative reflects a broader commitment by both Hanchey Bamboo Resort and BSDA to invest in the future of Kampong Cham’s youth while preserving and celebrating Cambodia’s rich historical legacy.

Through these efforts, we aim to build a more beautiful Kampong Cham and a stronger Cambodia that values its past while boldly stepping into the future. By supporting these programs, patrons contribute directly to a community-centric model of tourism that educates, empowers, and enlightens—ensuring that the timeless traditions of the Khmer people continue to thrive and inspire future generations.

How You Can Contribute

Supporting Apsara dance goes beyond appreciation. By visiting BSDA’s vocational schools or donating through their website, you can help sustain these vital cultural programs. Additionally, guests at Hanchey Bamboo Resort can book Apsara performances for their stays or events, or inquire about upcoming shows to ensure they don't miss this exquisite art form during their visit.

Apsara is not merely a dance; it is a cultural bridge that connects Cambodia’s past with its present and future. It is an emblem of national pride and a testament to the resilience and beauty of Cambodian traditions.

BSDA Staff Retreat 2018

This weekend we had the pleasure of hosting the annual staff retreat for Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA) at our hilltop resort. This gathering was a dual nod to both appreciation and personal growth, celebrating our shared commitment to social enterprise. It offered a chance for the team to step back from their diverse initiatives, including the Mekong Kampuchea’s Kids, the Cambodian Consortium for Out of School Children (CCOSC), the hospitality training at Smile Restaurant, the education-focused Angkor School, and the cultural preservation efforts of the Apsara Dance program.

The retreat was an enriching experience that allowed the BSDA staff to pause, reflect, and develop skills integral to their invaluable work. With frequent visits from the local monks of Wat Hanchey, our team was able to partake in meaningful meditation sessions right here at the resort, strengthening their mindfulness amidst the daily operations.

Activities took place in our airy bamboo Lotus Shala, a structure that embodies the ethos of our resort—natural, simple, and open to the breeze of the Mekong River. This setting proved ideal for the staff to engage not only in listening to lectures but also in team-building exercises and outdoor yoga sessions, which are a staple of the tranquil environment we nurture here at Hanchey.

It's more than just a retreat; it’s a reinforcement of BSDA’s mission through the personal and professional development of its team members. Hanchey Bamboo Resort is committed to being a part of this growth, providing a space where development goes hand in hand with downtime.

We extend our gratitude to the BSDA staff for allowing us to be part of their journey and look forward to continuing our support for their cause and well-being.
